I remember wanting a Dremel since Dremel's inception. It took me a long time, but I finally did get a Dremel, and I'm so glad I did. I have a lot of fun when engrossed in deep concentration and it turns out that engraved hardwood art requires deep concentration! I'm thrilled that I have the time to pursue this new craft. I'm even more thrilled that people out there, people just like you, enjoy my creative efforts.
I use 3/4" (approx.) hardwood, both domestic and exotic, from Rockler. I've tried various forms of pine and I simply cannot work with it; additionally, most cedar, while classified as a hardwood, has too many knots for me to successfully engrave. If you have a preference of hardwood type, please let me know (keep in mind, prices increase when requesting anything more expensive than Rockler's current Lumber of the Month special) and if it's available, I will gladly grab it for you. Some hardwoods may require a small deposit which is applied to your balance.
Most go about engraving wood with a router; some use a CNC Laser, both of which can yield some marvelous results. For me, It's a several stage process. I start on my computer where I layout the design, then move on to transferring the design to the board by hand tracing the design with my craft knife. I then undergo retracing and fully free-hand engraving the design with my Dremel. I give it a quick sanding to remove any splinters and rough edges. From there, I hand paint each engraving, sand it a bit more, and seal it with polyurethane for long term protection, and sand it a bit more for a nice smooth finish. Serving boards benefit from a layer of food-grade resin, prior to the polyurethane, to prevent stuff from getting stuck into the engraved parts.
I enjoy textual wood wall art. I find positive sayings and cheerful graphics help keep my mood calm and relaxed. So I'm trying to share that with all of you.
When a customer lights up after receiving their engraving, it just makes my heart smile, and gives me further inspiration to try to continually improve my craft.
My goal is to eventually own a CNC Laser for more complex engravings. While machined work differs from free-hand work, I truly appreciate both forms of engraving. If, or when, I get a laser engraver I'll be sure to post about it in The News.
Playing with wood is only one of my loves. I also enjoy knitting, sewing, the finer things in life, and other crafty things.
On this site, you'll find information about Heartfelt Stitchery, a stitching group I founded in January 2023. In addition to just knitting/crocheting for fun, we also do charity events several times per year. If you would like to participate, we'd love to have you! You can participate in several ways, check us out!
I've also dedicated a page to merchants that I love, or really, really want to try. While I do earn a commission, I've only listed merchants that I can stand behind. Most of the merchants are based here, in the United States, but there is one - a really good one - that is based in France. So please visit, Finer Things, and give them a gander, I'm sure you'll find something you love!
Since I enjoy crafts, who knows what else may pop up on this site. Stay tuned!
I also have a love of blending teas. I particularly enjoy making custom blends for those who enjoy tea! Some of my blends require you to join a Fandom, if you do not know the answers, I'll be happy to provide them, just send me an email requesting the answers. If you would like a blend named after you, get in touch, I'll ask you 3 questions, and then I'll create a blend just for you.
I receive a commission from the ads on this site when you purchase through the links displayed. I do not necessarily endorse nor promote the items in the random ads. I make every effort to prevent ads that I don't support, but alas, some may slip through.
